Zh. Baiskich with Friends, 1921. Creator: Unknown
Zh. Baiskich with Friends, 1921. The "Kuzbass" autonomous industrial colony was created in 1921. It was organized by American workers, who took on the obligation of inviting from the United States and Western Europe some eight thousand skilled workers and specialists to industrialize the Kuzbass. The Soviet government turned over to the colonists a number of Kemerovo mine shafts and an unfinished coking plant. To recruit volunteers to work in Siberia, a "Kuzbass Bureau" was opened in the middle of New York City, and an information bulletin began to be published in the United States. Between January 1922 and December 1923, however, only 566 persons arrived for work in the Kuzbass. The colonists included emigrants from America, Canada, the Netherlands, France, Australia, Jamaica, Indonesia, and other countries as well. Kemerovo Oblast Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Zh. Baiskich and his friends in 1921, during the establishment of the "Kuzbass" autonomous industrial colony. Created by American workers, this ambitious project aimed to bring skilled workers and specialists from the United States and Western Europe to industrialize the Kuzbass region in Siberia.
The Soviet government entrusted the colonists with several mine shafts in Kemerovo and an unfinished coking plant, setting the stage for a unique collaboration between international volunteers. Despite efforts to recruit more workers through a bureau in New York City and informational bulletins, only a fraction of the intended workforce arrived between 1922 and 1923.
Among those who answered the call were individuals from diverse backgrounds - emigrants from America, Canada, France, Australia, Jamaica, Indonesia, and other countries came together to contribute their expertise to this industrial endeavor. The group portrait exudes camaraderie as they stand united against a wintry backdrop in Siberia.
As we gaze upon this historic image frozen in time, we are reminded of the pioneering spirit that brought these friends together across borders and oceans to build a brighter future for themselves and their adopted homeland. Their legacy lives on through this snapshot of solidarity amidst challenging circumstances.
