EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of the British Salt Factory in Faulkner Lane, Middlewich, Cheshire East. The image showcases the main processing building as seen from across the tranquil Trent & Mersey Canal. The history behind this iconic salt factory dates back to April 16th, 1968 when construction work commenced on site. After a year of dedicated efforts, the factory was completed in early June 1969 and was officially inaugurated by none other than the esteemed Duke of Edinburgh on May 25th. Intriguingly, renowned construction company Laing returned to the site in 1971 to add an extension to the undried vacuum salt building. This expansion further solidified their commitment towards enhancing production capabilities at this thriving industrial hub. The photograph beautifully captures not only the architectural grandeur of this historic facility but also reflects its significance within Cheshire's industrial landscape during that era. The calm waters of Trent & Mersey Canal provide a picturesque backdrop for this bustling center of salt refinement. Preserved by A© Historic England Archive, this print serves as a testament to Britain's rich industrial heritage and reminds us of how far we have come since those industrious days. It is truly remarkable how such images can transport us back in time and evoke a sense of nostalgia for an era defined by hard work and innovation.
