EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in London's history - the demolition of Waterloo Bridge. Standing tall against the backdrop of Lambeth, Greater London, this iconic road bridge designed by John Rennie opened its majestic arches to the public in 1817. However, as progress marched forward in the 1930s, it was time for this Georgian beauty to make way for something new. In this snapshot frozen in time, two diligent men can be seen perched on a girder high above the River Thames. With sleeves rolled up and determination etched on their faces, they meticulously dismantle a temporary steel framework that had been erected back in 1925. Their laborious efforts symbolize not only their commitment but also an end of an era. The old Waterloo Bridge would soon give way to its successor during the 1940s. Yet, it is through Charles William Prickett's lens that we are granted a glimpse into this transformative period. The image encapsulates both the grandeur of engineering marvels from centuries past and the relentless march towards modernity. As we gaze upon these workmen suspended between history and progress, we are reminded of how our cities evolve over time - bridges built and demolished; memories made and forgotten. This print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and resilience while honoring those who shaped our urban landscapes with sweat and determination.
