CHELSEA AND WESTMINSTER HOSPITAL, FULHAM ROAD, KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, GREATER LONDON. A team of rock climbers abseiling and cleaning the roof of the atrium at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
As the hospital was nearing completion, a team of rock climbers were contracted to clean the roof and windows of the atrium due to the abseiling skills required.
Laing Management Contracting worked on the construction of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority between 1989 and 1993. The new teaching hospital was built on the site of the old St Stephens Hospital, which was demolished in the early months of 1989. The use of fast track construction techniques enabled the entire project to be completed in less than 5 years, and the hospital was officially opened by the Queen on 13 May 1993

This print captures a daring feat of extreme window cleaning at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in Kensington and Chelsea, Greater London. As the hospital's construction neared completion, a team of skilled rock climbers were contracted to tackle the challenging task of cleaning the roof and windows of the atrium. Their abseiling abilities proved essential for this vertigo-inducing job. Laing Management Contracting oversaw the construction of this state-of-the-art teaching hospital between 1989 and 1993 on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority. The site where it stands today was previously occupied by St Stephens Hospital, which was demolished in early 1989 to make way for this modern facility. Utilizing fast track construction techniques, the project was completed in an impressive timeframe of less than five years. On May 13th, 1993, Queen Elizabeth II herself officially inaugurated Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. In this remarkable image captured by A© Historic England Archive, we witness these fearless climbers suspended from ropes as they meticulously clean every inch of glass on the towering atrium roof. This awe-inspiring display showcases their unwavering commitment to maintaining impeccable standards while ensuring utmost safety. The photograph not only highlights their incredible skills but also serves as a testament to the dedication put forth during both its construction and ongoing maintenance.
