Hospital at night JLP01_10_26669
West Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester, West Dorset. A night time view showing part of West Dorset County Hospital fronting an internal courtyard, with the glazed facade of the main stairwell lit up from within.
In the early 1980s plans were developed for a modern hospital to replace the old Dorchester Hospital, at a new site to the west of the town centre. A joint venture of Laings South West Region and Haden Young Limited were responsible for Phase I of the construction project, which was to provide 149 beds and included maternity and geriatric units, two operating theatres and a pathology and X-ray department. Phase I on the north part of the new site was completed in the late 1980s under the name West Dorset County Hospital. When Phase II on the south part of the site was completed in the mid 1990s, the whole site became known as Dorset County Hospital

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting atmosphere of the Hospital at night in West Dorset County. The image showcases a part of the hospital's front, facing an internal courtyard, illuminated by the mesmerizing glow emanating from within the glazed facade of its main stairwell. Intriguingly, this photograph takes us back to the early 1980s when plans were underway for a modern hospital to replace the old Dorchester Hospital. Laings South West Region and Haden Young Limited collaborated on Phase I of this ambitious construction project, which aimed to provide essential healthcare facilities such as maternity and geriatric units, operating theaters, and pathology and X-ray departments. Completed in the late 1980s under the name West Dorset County Hospital, Phase I consisted of 149 beds. As time progressed into the mid-1990s, Phase II was completed on another section of land southward from Phase I. With its completion came a new name for both sections combined: Dorset County Hospital. The nighttime ambiance depicted in this photograph adds an ethereal touch to an already impressive architectural feat. The play between darkness and light creates a sense of mystery while highlighting how hospitals are beacons of hope even during nocturnal hours. (Photo credit: Historic England Archive)
