This print captures a pivotal moment in the construction of the Second Severn Crossing, a remarkable feat of civil engineering. From atop the bridge, we are given a breathtaking view looking eastward, revealing the intricate work being carried out to join the deck units below. The Second Severn Crossing project was an ambitious collaboration between Laing Civil Engineering and French company GTM. Spanning over 5000 meters across the majestic River Severn, this cable-stayed bridge took four years to complete. Its purpose was to connect England and Wales, providing a vital link for motorists traveling along the M4 Motorway. The photograph transports us back to April 1992 when this monumental endeavor began. The dedication and expertise of countless engineers and workers can be seen in every detail captured within this image. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination. On June 5th, 1996, after years of hard work and meticulous planning, the Second Severn Crossing proudly opened its gates to eager travelers. This iconic structure stands just three miles downstream from its predecessor, the historic Severn Bridge which first welcomed traffic in 1966. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time by A© Historic England Archive, we are reminded of both our ability to conquer great challenges and our desire for connectivity that transcends borders.
