EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of the iconic Birmingham to Preston Motorway (M6). Taken from Structure 369/1 at Junction 16, Section D of the motorway, it provides a bird's eye view of the ongoing work. The image showcases the laying of the base course, known as C. B. G. B. C (Concrete Bound Granular Base Course), on a roundabout. The historical significance of this photograph lies in its depiction of John Laing Construction Ltd. 's involvement in this massive infrastructure project. Commencing in June 1960, their efforts aimed to connect Birmingham and Preston through a modern highway network. Section D alone spanned an impressive distance of 7 1/2 miles between Keele and Barthomley. The scene is bustling with activity as trucks and lorries navigate through the construction site. This snapshot not only highlights civil engineering prowess but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination during that era. Preserved by A© Historic England Archive, this print offers us a glimpse into an important chapter in British transportation history. It reminds us how far we have come since then while honoring those who dedicated their skills and labor to shape our modern road networks.
