Bridge in daylight JLP01_10_29356
SEVERN BRIDGE, M48, AUST, SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE. The Severn Bridge from the Aust beach at low tide, seen during strengthening work done by Laing.
The original design and construction of the Severn Bridge had under estimated the increased volume of traffic since its completion in 1966 and whilst built to last 120 years it was found to require remedial work after just 20. Laing Industrial Engineering & Construction won the £ 29.5m contract from the Department of Transport and strengthening work on all elements of the structure began in May 1987. The project was completed in April 1990 in the same year that Laing jointly won the contract for the construction of the second Severn Crossing that would take the traffic pressure off the first bridge and extend its lifespan even further

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Severn Bridge in all its glory, basking in the warm glow of daylight. Located in South Gloucestershire, this iconic bridge spans across the River Severn and connects Aust to Beachley. The image showcases the bridge from a unique perspective, taken from Aust beach during low tide. The significance of this photograph lies not only in its stunning composition but also in the historical context it represents. Originally completed in 1966, the Severn Bridge was designed to withstand 120 years of traffic. However, due to an underestimation of increased volume over time, remedial work became necessary after just two decades. Laing Industrial Engineering & Construction took on the monumental task of strengthening every aspect of this architectural marvel. In May 1987, they were awarded a £29.5 million contract by the Department of Transport to undertake these vital improvements. The project lasted until April 1990 when it was successfully completed. Interestingly enough, during that same year, Laing secured another significant contract for constructing the second Severn Crossing - a testament to their expertise and dedication towards extending infrastructure lifespan while alleviating traffic pressure. This remarkable print serves as a reminder not only of engineering triumphs but also highlights how human ingenuity can overcome challenges faced by our ever-evolving transportation needs.
