SEVERN BRIDGE, M48, AUST, SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE. A view of the underside of the deck of the Severn Bridge showing the access gantries that cross beneath it.
The original design and construction of the Severn Bridge had under estimated the increased volume of traffic since its completion in 1966 and whilst built to last 120 years it was found to require remedial work after just 20. Laing Industrial Engineering & Construction won the £ 29.5m contract from the Department of Transport and strengthening work on all elements of the structure began in May 1987. The project was completed in April 1990 in the same year that Laing jointly won the contract for the construction of the second Severn Crossing that would take the traffic pressure off the first bridge and extend its lifespan even further

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the hidden world beneath the deck of the iconic Severn Bridge. The image showcases the intricate network of access gantries that crisscross beneath this engineering marvel, providing a unique perspective on its grandeur. Originally completed in 1966, the Severn Bridge was designed to withstand 120 years of traffic. However, as time passed, it became evident that its capacity had been underestimated. After just two decades, remedial work was required to ensure its longevity. In May 1987, Laing Industrial Engineering & Construction secured a £29.5 million contract from the Department of Transport to strengthen all elements of this magnificent structure. This ambitious project aimed to address the increased volume of traffic and extend the bridge's lifespan. The endeavor proved successful as it reached completion in April 1990 – coincidentally marking the same year when Laing jointly won another significant contract for constructing the second Severn Crossing. This new addition would alleviate traffic pressure on its predecessor while further extending its operational life. This remarkable photograph not only showcases an architectural masterpiece but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and adaptability in overcoming challenges faced by vital infrastructure projects like bridges. It is a reminder that even structures built with exceptional foresight may require constant care and improvement to meet evolving demands efficiently.
