Passing bus JLP01_10_00430

WESTWAY FLYOVER, A40, KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, GREATER LONDON. A Routemaster bus passing a concrete batching plant on Great Western Road, whilst the transporter crane lowers a deck unit of the Westway Flyover into place.
The transporter crane was specially designed and built by Laings Plant Department. The four-legged gantry made 400 trips along the carriageway of Section 5, lifting the individual deck units from the Harrow Road end, transporting them the length of the highway and lowering them into position. The deck units for Section 5 weigh up to 130 tonnes and are more than 28 metres wide, carrying all six lanes of the carriageway. The units are supported on a temporary structure of steel beams weighing 160 tons until each span is complete, stressed together and self-supporting. This photograph was taken at grid reference TQ

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in the construction of the iconic Westway Flyover in Greater London during the 1960s. In this image, a classic Routemaster bus gracefully passes by a concrete batching plant on Great Western Road, while an impressive transporter crane lowers a massive deck unit into place. The transporter crane featured in this photograph was meticulously designed and constructed by Laings Plant Department specifically for this project. With its four-legged gantry, it made an astonishing 400 trips along Section 5 of the carriageway. Its purpose was to lift individual deck units from one end of Harrow Road, transport them along the entire length of the highway, and carefully lower them into position. These deck units were no ordinary structures; they weighed up to 130 tonnes and spanned over 28 meters wide, accommodating all six lanes of traffic. To ensure stability during construction, each unit was supported by temporary steel beams weighing a staggering 160 tons until every span was complete and self-supporting. This remarkable photograph offers us a glimpse into both the engineering marvels involved in constructing such infrastructure as well as daily life on London's roads during that era. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination to create efficient transportation systems that stand the test of time.
