WESTWAY FLYOVER, A40, KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, GREATER LONDON. A woman confronting a police officer during a demonstration against the opening of the Westway Flyover.
Acklam Road was the focus of protests against the Westway by local residents. Houses along one side of the street had been demolished to make way for the flyover. At a reception held earlier that day at the Lords Tavern, George Clark, leader of the residents social rights committee, had presented their objections to the Minister of Transport and representatives from the Greater London Council. By September the GLC had promised the residents that they would be rehoused. This photograph was taken at grid reference TQ

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures a defining moment in the history of Kensington and Chelsea, Greater London. The image showcases a brave woman confronting a police officer during a protest against the opening of the Westway Flyover. The flyover construction had caused significant disruption and displacement for local residents. The focal point of these protests was Acklam Road, where houses had been demolished to make way for the flyover. Determined to voice their objections, George Clark, leader of the residents' social rights committee, presented their concerns earlier that day at a reception held at Lords Tavern. In this particular photograph taken in the 1970s, tensions run high as emotions spill onto the streets. The woman's unwavering gaze meets that of an impassive police officer, symbolizing both defiance and frustration towards those responsible for displacing families from their homes. It is worth noting that by September, following persistent activism from local residents like these protestors, promises were made by representatives from both the Minister of Transport and Greater London Council to rehouse those affected by this disruptive project. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this print serves as a reminder of how ordinary people can come together to challenge decisions impacting their communities while shedding light on important issues surrounding construction projects, road development, transport systems, protests against injustice and inequality – all captured within one frame.
