Sir John Laing Building, Page Street, Mill Hill, Barnet, Greater London. The circular fountain and U-shaped stair tower by the front entrance to the Sir John Laing Building, Mill Hill.
The Sir John Laing Building, named in honour of the companys president who died in January 1978 at the age of 98, was built between 1977 and 1980 having been planned since 1974. The building completed a phase of development at Laings Mill Hill headquarters complex, an area that the firm had occupied since moving from Carlisle in 1922. By 1988 however a major restructuring of the company and meant a wholesale relocation out of the Mill Hill site with just the Sir John Laing Building remaining as Group HQ. It too was subsequently demolished and housing occupies the site. The use of brick in a sculptural way was a deliberate attempt by architect Graham Barsby to distance the design from the concrete rectilinear forms of the 1960s. The building won a Certificate of Merit in the Brick Development Association Architectural Awards in 1983

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the elegant Fountain JLP01_10_08853, located at the front entrance of the Sir John Laing Building in Mill Hill, Barnet, Greater London. The circular fountain and U-shaped stair tower create a striking visual display that perfectly complements the architectural beauty of the building. Named after Sir John Laing, who served as the president of the company until his passing in 1978 at an impressive age of 98, this iconic structure was meticulously planned between 1974 and its completion in 1980. It marked a significant milestone in Laings' headquarters complex development in Mill Hill, where they had been based since their relocation from Carlisle back in 1922. Architect Graham Barsby's deliberate use of brick as a sculptural element was a bold departure from the prevailing concrete rectilinear designs popularized during the 1960s. This unique approach not only set it apart but also earned it recognition with a Certificate of Merit in the Brick Development Association Architectural Awards in 1983. Although subsequent restructuring led to most buildings being demolished and replaced by housing developments by 1988, this remarkable structure remained standing as Group HQ for some time before meeting its eventual fate. Nonetheless, this stunning photograph immortalizes its grandeur and serves as a testament to both architectural excellence and historical significance captured by Historic England Archive.
