Meeting JLP01_09_820415

Sir John Laing Building, Page Street, Mill Hill, Barnet, Greater London. A meeting of the Treasury Department team at the Sir John Laing Building, Mill Hill.
The Sir John Laing Building, named in honour of the companys president who died in January 1978 at the age of 98, was built between 1977 and 1980 having been planned since 1974. The building completed a phase of development at Laings Mill Hill headquarters complex, an area that the firm had occupied since moving from Carlisle in 1922. By 1988 however a major restructuring of the company and meant a wholesale relocation out of the Mill Hill site with just the Sir John Laing Building remaining as Group HQ. It too was subsequently demolished and housing occupies the site. The use of brick in a sculptural way was a deliberate attempt by architect Graham Barsby to distance the design from the concrete rectilinear forms of the 1960s. The building won a Certificate of Merit in the Brick Development Association Architectural Awards in 1983

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous gathering of the Treasury Department team at the iconic Sir John Laing Building in Mill Hill, Greater London. Named after the esteemed president of the company, Sir John Laing, who passed away at an impressive age of 98 in January 1978, this architectural marvel was meticulously planned from 1974 and finally completed between 1977 and 1980. Situated within Laing's headquarters complex in Mill Hill since their relocation from Carlisle in 1922, this building marked a significant milestone for the company. However, due to a major restructuring in 1988, most of the firm relocated elsewhere while only the Sir John Laing Building remained as Group HQ until its eventual demolition. Today, housing occupies this once vibrant site. Architect Graham Barsby deliberately employed brickwork as a sculptural element to distinguish this design from the concrete rectilinear forms prevalent during that era. This innovative approach earned recognition when it received a Certificate of Merit in the Brick Development Association Architectural Awards back in 1983. Preserved by Historic England Archive with utmost care and attention to detail, this print offers us a glimpse into both architectural excellence and corporate history. It serves as a timeless reminder of an important meeting held within these walls – where ideas were exchanged and decisions made – before time took its toll on this remarkable structure.
