Unity House JLP01_10_13157

Unity House, Euston Road, Camden, Greater London. The front elevation of Unity House, the headquarters for the National Union of Railwaymen, viewed from the north across Euston Road.
The contract for the new £ 4.5 million headquarters for the National Union of Railwaymen at Euston Road was awarded to Laings London Region. The new headquarters were built on the site of the former Unity House, which had been the home of the National Union of Railwaymen since 1910. Some features of the old building were incorporated into its modern counterpart, including the boardrooms leaded cupola skylight and panelling. The six-storey building was designed around a courtyard and was located between the Wellcome Foundation Building and the Babcock Building, in the area between Euston Road and Gower Place

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of Unity House, the former headquarters for the National Union of Railwaymen in Camden, Greater London. The image showcases the front elevation of this iconic building as seen from the north across Euston Road. Built at a cost of £4.5 million by Laings London Region, this new headquarters replaced the original Unity House that had served as the union's home since 1910. While incorporating some features from its predecessor, such as the boardroom's leaded cupola skylight and panelling, this six-storey modern structure was designed around a central courtyard. Situated between two prominent buildings -the Wellcome Foundation Building and Babcock Building- on Euston Road and Gower Place respectively, Unity House stood as a symbol of unity and strength for railway workers during its time. The photograph provides a glimpse into an era when Unity House was bustling with activity, serving as an office space in the 1980s. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, it serves as a reminder of both architectural excellence and historical significance. Through this image, we are transported back to witness not only an impressive architectural feat but also appreciate how Unity House played a vital role in supporting railwaymen throughout their struggles and triumphs over many decades.
