Clifton Cathedral JLP01_08_095347
Clifton Cathedral, Clifton Park, Clifton, City of Bristol. Two nuns looking up at a panel created in Faircrete by sculptor William Mitchell in Clifton Cathedral, depicting one of the Stations of the Cross.
This Roman Catholic Cathedral was designed by Ronald Weeks, Es Jennett and Antoni Poremba of the Percy Thomas Partnership. It was built by John Laing & Son Limited between 1969-1973 and was constructed using pre-cast concrete panels and in-situ concrete. In 1974 it received the Concrete Award from the Concrete Society. The English sculptor William Mitchell (born 1925) was commissioned to create 14 panels showing the Stations of the Cross, depicting Jesus on the day of his crucifixion. These panels were created in Faircrete, a fibrous concrete which could be moulded like potters clay

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a serene moment within the grandeur of Clifton Cathedral in Bristol. Two nuns stand side by side, their eyes fixed upon a magnificent panel created by sculptor William Mitchell. This particular panel is part of a series depicting the Stations of the Cross, showcasing Jesus on the day of his crucifixion. Designed by Ronald Weeks, Es Jennett, and Antoni Poremba of the Percy Thomas Partnership, this Roman Catholic Cathedral stands as an architectural marvel. Constructed between 1969-1973 by John Laing & Son Limited, it boasts pre-cast concrete panels and in-situ concrete elements that lend strength to its structure. In 1974, Clifton Cathedral was honored with the prestigious Concrete Award from the Concrete Society for its exceptional construction techniques. The renowned English sculptor William Mitchell was commissioned to create these remarkable Faircrete panels – fibrous concrete that could be molded like potters clay – adding an artistic touch to this sacred space. As we gaze at this image captured by A© Historic England Archive, we are reminded not only of the beauty found within religious architecture but also of the power art holds in conveying profound stories and emotions. The juxtaposition between ancient traditions and modern materials creates a unique atmosphere where faith meets innovation.
