Oil rig leaving dry dock JLP01_08_099183

Graythorp, Hartlepool. A view of tug boats towing the oil platform Graythorp I away from the dry dock basin at Graythorp.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. Graythorp I had its christening ceremony on June 4th and was launched on Saturday 29th June 1974, heading off for the Forties Oil Field 250 miles away

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in maritime history - the departure of an oil rig from the dry dock basin at Graythorp. The image showcases a fleet of powerful tug boats gracefully guiding the colossal oil platform, Graythorp I, towards its destined location in the Forties Oil Field. Dating back to the early 1970s, this photograph represents a pivotal era when Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the renowned Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the grounds of William Gray Shipyard. This innovative facility played a crucial role in supporting BP's ambitious North Sea Oil Project by facilitating the construction of fixed platform drilling rigs. On June 4th, amidst great anticipation and excitement, Graythorp I was christened before being triumphantly launched on Saturday 29th June 1974. With its journey spanning over 250 miles to reach its designated spot, this remarkable feat showcased not only engineering prowess but also exemplified human determination and ingenuity. The image beautifully encapsulates both industrial might and natural beauty as it depicts these majestic vessels navigating through calm waters against a backdrop of serene skies. It serves as a testament to mankind's relentless pursuit of progress while harmonizing with nature's elements. Preserved within Historic England Archive, this print is more than just an artistic composition; it is an invaluable piece documenting our rich maritime heritage and celebrating those who contributed to shaping our offshore industry for generations to come.
