Felsted sugar silo JLP01_08_097848
Felsted Beet Sugar Factory, Flitch Green, Uttlesford, Essex. An interior view looking up towards the partially completed conical roof of a sugar silo at Felsted Beet Sugar Factory, with a Laing employee gesturing towards the roof.
A sugar factory was built near Felsted in 1926. The first silo to be built by Laing at Felsted Beet Sugar Factory was constructed in 1956 and took three weeks; the second silo was built in six days in 1974. The factory produced sugar until 1981 and the site was then used for storage until 1991. It was later redeveloped for housing. This photograph was published in the April 1974 edition of Team Spirit, the Laing newsletter

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in time at the Felsted Beet Sugar Factory in Flitch Green, Uttlesford, Essex. The image showcases an interior view of a sugar silo, with the focus on the partially completed conical roof. A Laing employee can be seen gesturing towards the impressive structure, highlighting the scale and complexity of this engineering feat. The history behind this photograph is equally fascinating. The Felsted sugar factory was established in 1926 and played a significant role in sugar production until its closure in 1981. This particular silo was constructed by Laing in 1974, taking only six days to complete - a testament to their expertise and efficiency. The circular shape of the silo creates a visually striking composition within the frame. Natural light streams through openings near the top, casting intriguing shadows that add depth to the image. Although no longer used for its original purpose, this site holds great historical significance. After serving as storage space until 1991, it underwent redevelopment into housing. Published in Team Spirit, Laing's newsletter from April 1974, this photograph offers us a glimpse into an era when industry and construction were thriving. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and serves as a reminder of our ability to transform landscapes for progress and development.
