EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in time at the Solway Chemical Works in Whitehaven, Cumbria. In this close-up shot, we see a dedicated worker diligently drilling screws into a wooden plank in the bustling construction yard. The atmosphere is filled with energy and determination as progress takes shape. Solway Chemicals Ltd, a subsidiary of Marchon Products Ltd, played an integral role in establishing this chemical works site back in 1943. Over the years, it grew to include an anhydrite development adjacent to the Marchon site. Known colloquially as Solway Works, this expansive plant specialized in producing sulphuric acid and boasted various facilities such as an anhydrite mine, cement kilns, and even an acid plant. The photograph itself showcases not only the industrious nature of work during the 1950s but also highlights the importance of laborers like our protagonist who contributed to building these vital structures. Their dedication and skill are evident as they focus on their task amidst the hustle and bustle around them. Preserved by A© Historic England Archive for future generations to admire and appreciate, this print offers us a glimpse into both past construction practices and human resilience. It serves as a reminder of how hard work can shape landscapes while honoring those who labored tirelessly behind-the-scenes at places like Solway Chemical Works.
