In 1958, remedial work began on the lock entrance to Portishead Dock for the Port of Bristol Authority. The lock entrance had been damaged by scour and wave action and needed to be removed and renewed, and the existing walls underpinned. At the same time, work was underway on the final third of Portishead B Power Station

This print captures a moment in time at the Portishead Dock project in North Somerset during the 1950s. The image showcases three gangers, hardworking individuals employed on this ambitious construction endeavor. Standing proudly against the backdrop of the dock, these men symbolize dedication and teamwork. Published in Laings monthly newsletter, Team Spirit, a cropped version of this photograph was featured in the People section of the May 1959 edition. It serves as a testament to their significant contribution to this historic development. The Portishead Dock project commenced in 1958 with remedial work on the lock entrance for the Port of Bristol Authority. The lock entrance had suffered damage from scour and wave action, necessitating its removal and renewal along with underpinning of existing walls. Simultaneously, progress was being made on completing one-third of Portishead B Power Station. This print not only captures an important milestone in infrastructure development but also provides a glimpse into Victorian-era architecture and construction techniques. It is a remarkable visual representation that stands as a tribute to those who labored tirelessly to shape our built environment.
