EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of Newcastle and Gateshead, two cities intertwined by the majestic River Tyne. From the vantage point atop Castle Garth Keep, one is treated to a breathtaking cityscape that stretches as far as the eye can see. The keep itself stands proudly in the foreground, its medieval architecture a testament to centuries gone by. Built between 1168 and 1178, it was lovingly restored in later years for the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle. The square tower with three storeys exudes an air of strength and resilience. As we gaze beyond the keep, our eyes are drawn towards the river below. The iconic Tyne Bridge gracefully spans across on the left side while on the right we catch sight of both Swing Bridge and High Level Bridge. These engineering marvels from different eras coexist harmoniously in this urban landscape. Every element within this photograph tells a story – from medieval history to early 20th-century road bridges and Victorian railway bridges. It encapsulates not just architectural grandeur but also highlights how these structures have shaped life along this bustling waterway. Ursula Clark's skillful lens has immortalized this scene, inviting us to appreciate both past and present through her artistry. This print serves as a visual reminder of our rich heritage and invites us to explore further into Newcastle's enchanting tapestry of history and modernity.
