EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite roof light of the billiard room in the iconic Boleyn Tavern, located on Barking Road in Upton Park, Newham, Greater London. The tavern itself was constructed between 1899 and 1900 by architects W G Shoebridge and H W Rising, boasting a remarkable Victorian design that has stood the test of time. The Grade II listed establishment underwent restoration work from 2020 to 2021, during which the billiard hall was transformed into a charming dining room. However, it is this painted roof light that steals the spotlight in this image. Its stained glass panels beautifully filter natural sunlight into the space below, creating an enchanting ambiance for patrons to enjoy. With its intricate patterns and vibrant colors reminiscent of a bygone era, this skylight serves as both a functional ceiling light and a stunning piece of artistry. It perfectly captures the essence of Victorian craftsmanship while adding character and charm to this historic public house. Photographer Simon Inglis expertly captures every detail of this magnificent rooflight with his keen eye for architectural beauty. This print not only immortalizes an important part of Barking's heritage but also invites viewers to appreciate the timeless elegance found within these walls.
