EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the vibrant atmosphere of Splash Park in Barking Park, Greater London. Once a lido, this open-air swimming pool held cherished memories for many until its closure in 1988. However, thanks to a remarkable transformation and a £7 million refurbishment project, it has been reborn as the delightful Splash Park we see today. As we gaze upon this image, our eyes are drawn to the restored entrance block and fountains that stand proudly amidst the park's perimeter wall. The bright colors and playful design of the splash pad evoke feelings of joy and excitement associated with childhood summers. In this snapshot frozen in time, we can almost feel the refreshing water droplets on our skin as families gather around to escape from the scorching heatwave. It is a testament to how sport and recreation have always played an essential role in bringing communities together during summertime. Simon Inglis skillfully captured not only an architectural marvel but also a symbol of resilience and rejuvenation. This photograph serves as a reminder that even beloved landmarks can evolve over time while still preserving their historical significance. Let us celebrate Barking Park's journey from lido to Splash Park—a place where new memories are created while honoring its past legacy.
