EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the rich history and transformation of Wimbledon Leisure Centre in Greater London. Once known as Wimbledon Public Baths, this iconic building has witnessed a remarkable evolution over the years. Originally opened in 1901 as a single pool and slipper baths, it quickly became a popular destination for locals seeking relaxation and recreation. In 1929, an expansion project added another pool, club room, rifle range, learner pool, and cafe to accommodate the growing demand for leisure activities. However, with changing times came new needs. The 1929 pool was eventually converted into a state-of-the-art fitness gymnasium to cater to modern health enthusiasts. Today, this historic structure stands proudly as part of Wimbledon Leisure Centre and Spa. The print showcases the architectural beauty of this Edwardian-era building while highlighting its significance in providing public access to sports and recreation facilities throughout its existence. From swimming baths to indoor sports arenas, this location has continuously adapted to meet the evolving demands of its community. Preserved by Historic England's efforts in capturing our nation's heritage through photography prints like these by Simon Inglis, we can appreciate both the historical value and cultural importance that places like Wimbledon Leisure Centre hold within our society.
