EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the vibrant atmosphere of Greyhound racing at Hall Green Greyhound Stadium in Birmingham. The illuminated scoreboard takes center stage, adding to the excitement and anticipation during a thrilling race night. Despite initial opposition from local residents, Hall Green Greyhound Stadium opened its doors in 1927 and quickly became a popular destination for sports enthusiasts. Over the years, it expanded to include a speedway track (closed in 1937) and even a football pitch (1951-1965), showcasing its versatility as an entertainment venue. The stadium's success reached new heights during the late 20th century with significant investment and development. In recognition of its excellence, Hall Green won the prestigious Greyhound Racing Association Racecourse of the Year award in 2002. However, like many iconic landmarks, Hall Green Greyhound Stadium faced an unfortunate fate. It closed its doors permanently in 2017 and was subsequently demolished in 2018 to make way for housing development on this historic site. This print not only immortalizes the thrill of greyhound racing but also serves as a poignant reminder of how our urban landscapes evolve over time. It is a testament to the passion people have for sport and recreation while highlighting the deep connection between humans and animals within these sporting events.
