Memorial Photographic Studios DP413931
52 - 52B Robertson Street, Hastings, Hastings, East Sussex. Exterior view of the former Memorial Photographic Studios from the south.
Former Memorial Photographic Studios, set over much-altered ground floor shops, occupy the upper floors of a commercial building on a flat-iron site at the apex of Robertson Street and Cambridge Road, which radiate, as part of a planned vista, from the C19 commercial centre of the town. The main elevation faces Robertson Street, which was one of the more affluent shopping streets on the south coast in the later C19. The studios have a small entrance on Cambridge Road which is otherwise dominated by a large panel advertising the Memorial Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the former Memorial Photographic Studios in Hastings, East Sussex. The building, located on Robertson Street and Cambridge Road, stands proudly at the apex of these two bustling streets. Once a symbol of Victorian pomp and grandeur, the studios now occupy the upper floors of a commercial building that has undergone significant alterations over time. The main facade faces Robertson Street, which was renowned as one of the most affluent shopping destinations along the south coast during the late 19th century. As part of a planned vista from the town's C19 commercial center, this location holds historical significance within Hastings. Although its exterior exudes civic pride with its ornate architecture and intricate details, it is juxtaposed by an insensitive modern shopfront that seems out of place against such historic charm. This clash between old-world elegance and contemporary tackiness adds an intriguing layer to this photograph. As we gaze upon this image captured by Chris Redgrave, we are transported back in time to witness both decline and resilience. The former Memorial Photographic Studios serve as a reminder of how high street businesses have evolved throughout history while still maintaining their unique character amidst changing times.
