EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite faience tiled staircase located in the entrance hall of the former Picton Road Baths in Wavertree, Liverpool. The walls and pilasters are adorned with specially made Pilkington faience tiling, displaying a stunning combination of green, mint, aqua, teal, and turquoise hues. The Picton Road Baths were an architectural marvel when they opened their doors in May 1906. Designed by Borough Engineer W R Court at a cost of £24,000, this grand building boasted impressive features both inside and out. Internally, the Pilkington Tile & Pottery Company from Clifton supplied glazed tiling and faience work that added to its splendor. Originally serving as a popular swimming facility until its closure in 1994, this historic structure underwent transformation to become the Wavertree One Stop Shop for Liverpool City Council. Opening its doors in 2005 but sadly closing around 2020, it provided government services within these remarkable surroundings. Designated as a Grade II Listed building due to its architectural significance and historical value to Liverpool's sports heritage scene; it stands as a testament to Edwardian craftsmanship. Notably featured on the walls is the iconic liver bird - emblematic of the city itself. This print captures not only an extraordinary piece of tiled artistry but also preserves memories of sport and recreation enjoyed within these walls throughout history.
