EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable artwork of Elias van Nijmegen, depicting a pivotal moment in biblical history. Bathsheba, portrayed with grace and elegance, is seen beseeching her son Solomon for his consent to marry Adonia to Abisagh. The painting, created using linen and oil paints, beautifully captures the emotions and tension within this scene. Adonia, King David's eldest son who still yearns for the kingship during his father's lifetime, falls deeply in love with Abisagh. After David's passing, Adonias turns to Bathsheba for help in seeking Solomon's permission for their union. In an act of utmost respect and authority, Solomon receives his mother on bended knee before him and then has a throne placed beside his own. However, when Bathsheba presents Adonia's request on behalf of their love story to Solomon, he reacts with unexpected aggression. Feeling threatened by Adonia's aspirations for power through marriage into the royal family lineage, Solomon decides that if Batseba pleads so fervently for her son’s cause then it would be just as easy to grant him the kingship instead. Tragically enough though not entirely surprising given such circumstances surrounding ambition and succession battles within monarchies throughout history; Adonias meets an untimely demise at the hands of order from none other than Solomon himself (1 Kings 2:9-24). This thought-provoking artwork can be found in Rotterdam City Triangle Leuvehaven alongside parts of Josua Belle II’s house from 1680-1738. It serves as a poignant reminder of power struggles within families and kingdoms alike while also showcasing Van Nijmegen’s exceptional talent as an artist capturing historical moments through paintbrush strokes.
