EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing fantasy landscape featuring St Charles Borromeo. The scene unfolds in an idyllic classical setting, where the saint stands beside an enormous marble sarcophagus adorned with a bas-relief depicting the adoration of the shepherds. Believed to be based on a painting attributed to Rafael from around 1635, this performance art piece comes alive as Borromeo points towards the intricate relief while engaging in conversation with two men, one of whom is a deacon. A crippled man sits humbly at his side, adding depth and humanity to the composition. In the foreground on the left, we witness the Holy Family riding donkeys with young Joseph leading them. Meanwhile, in the middle of this enchanting landscape, a blind boy and girl navigate their way across a gentle stream. To our right in the second plane, we encounter a well-dressed gentleman generously offering alms to a group of beggars. St Charles Borromeo is depicted here wearing cardinal's attire and may be recognized by his cardinal's hat and crucifix or even by having a rope around his neck symbolizing penance. His association with miracles during Mary and Joseph's flight into Egypt is also hinted at through subtle imagery present within this artwork. Painted between 1700-1720 by Henry Ferguson (possibly) from France, this oil-on-canvas masterpiece measures approximately 130.5 cm high and 195.5 cm wide. Its rich colors and meticulous brushwork bring forth an ethereal quality that transports viewers into an otherworldly realm filled with wonderment and spirituality.
