Hugo de Groot young age small sticker name Henri IV
Hugo de Groot at a young age, Although a small sticker with the name Henri IV has been affixed to the back, this is a bust of Hugo de Groot as a 15-year-old young man. He is seen from the right in a three-quarter profile and seated with his right hand in the side, the elbow turned to the viewer. The prodigy Hugo de Groot already had a university degree in 1599: during his stay in France in 1598 he was promoted in law. King Henry IV gave him a medallion on this occasion with a portrait of the king himself, which De Groot is holding in his left hand here. This medallion has probably given rise to the wrong identification. The identification as Hugo de Groot at a younger age is based on a portrait engraving by Jacob de Gheyn (II) from 1599, historical persons, Hugo de Groot, Arnoud van Halen, Amsterdam, 1710 - 1719, oil paint (paint), tin (metal), wood (plant material), gilding (material), gilding, h 10.2 cm × w 8.6 cm h 13.7 cm × w 10.7 cm × d 1.6 cm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a young Hugo de Groot, renowned for his prodigious intellect and legal expertise. At just 15 years old, he is depicted in a three-quarter profile, seated with his right hand resting on the side. Interestingly, a small sticker bearing the name Henri IV has been affixed to the back of this bust. However, it is important to note that this identification may be erroneous due to an intriguing backstory. During his time in France in 1598, King Henry IV bestowed upon De Groot a medallion featuring a portrait of himself. In this image, De Groot can be seen holding the very same medallion in his left hand. The confusion surrounding the identification likely stems from this medallion's association with King Henry IV rather than accurately representing De Groot at a younger age. To establish De Groot's youthful appearance, reference was made to an engraving by Jacob de Gheyn (II) dating back to 1599. This remarkable piece of art measures approximately 10.2 cm in height and 8.6 cm in width without commercial use intentions. It serves as both an homage to historical figures like Hugo de Groot and Arnoud van Halen while offering viewers insight into their lives during Amsterdam's golden era between 1710-1719.
