EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent "Machina della coccagna" monument, created to honor Emperor Charles VI on his name day. Commissioned by Michael Friedrich Graf von Althann, this ephemeral masterpiece stood proudly in front of the Palazzo Real in Naples. Designed as a tripartite triumphal arch, it exudes grandeur and elegance. Atop the monument sits the double-headed Imperial eagle and Cardinal Althann's insignia, symbolizing power and authority. The intricate details are truly awe-inspiring; from festoons to fowls, bulls to fountains, every element adds to its splendor. The focal point of this enchanting artwork is a personification of Abundance holding a cornucopia - a powerful representation of prosperity and plenty. This figure radiates grace and generosity, reminding us of the bountiful blessings that life can offer. The inscription on this print further emphasizes its significance: "re di Spagna Vngaria Boemia" acknowledging Emperor Charles VI's reign over Spain, Hungary, Bohemia, and more. It also credits Cardinal Michele Federico d'Althann for his role as viceregent and captain general in the Kingdom of Naples. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece captured by Michelangelo de Blasio and Francesco de Grado through their masterful etching technique in 1724, we are transported back to an era where art was used not only for aesthetic pleasure but also as a means to celebrate great leaders like Emperor Charles VI.
