EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases an exquisite work of art titled "þÖ¢þ╣╗Õ¡ÉÕ£░Õó¿þ½╣Õø│µëôµÄøÒÇÇþÑçÕ£ÆÕìùµÁÀþ¡å (Artokoloro) (白繻子地墨竹図打掛 祇園南海筆, overrobe, uchikake, bamboo, edo period, 1615–1868, first half, 18th century, japan)". This rare and remarkable piece transports us back to the Edo period in Japan between 1615 and 1868. The artist behind this masterpiece is Gion Nankai (1677–1751), a renowned poet and early nanga artist. The vividly painted image beautifully captures the essence of light and dark ink enhanced by mist. Bamboo is prominently featured as a favored theme among nanga artists during this time. Nankai's artistic skills shine through in his meticulous brushwork and use of gold powder on silk satin. The overall dimensions of this artwork measure an impressive 64 3/4 x 48 7/8 inches (1645 x 1242 cm). It is truly a testament to the talent and dedication of both the artist and Artokoloro.
