EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Whale-oil Refinery Village Smerenburg, a bustling whale-oil factory located on Amsterdam Island at the northern tip of Spitzbergen (Svalbard). The settlement was primarily inhabited by Dutch whalers who toiled tirelessly in their quest for precious whale oil. Although the painter had never set foot in this remote village, he skillfully combined various images and stories he had heard to create this stunning piece. The painting features a majestic mountain on the left, believed to be Jan Mayen Island's iconic Beerenberg, towering alongside masts of whaling ships. On the beach, a tear-proof oven can be seen where chunks of whale bacon are cooked and transformed into valuable liquid tear. A flanged whale carcass rests nearby, serving as a testament to the arduous work carried out by these brave whalers. Towards the rear right of the composition lie men's barracks and various facilities dedicated to processing materials related to whaling, crafts, industries, and agriculture. The presence of swimming mammals such as whales adds an element of dynamism and life amidst this harsh Arctic environment. Painted by Cornelis de Man in 1639 using canvas and oil paint techniques, this artwork measures approximately 108 cm in height by 205 cm in width. Its intricate details transport viewers back in time to an era when Smeerenburg thrived as a vital hub for Nordic or Greenland Company's operations.
