10th 1602 1668 Algernon Anthony Dijk Dyke Northumberland Percy Tenth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Algernon Percy, the 10th Earl of Northumberland, in the prime of his naval and military career. Born in 1602, Percy was a prominent figure in the English Civil War, serving as a loyalist commander under the future King Charles I. His naval prowess was demonstrated during the Battle of the River Plate in 1617, where he played a crucial role in the English victory against the Spanish. The earl's military career began in earnest during the Bishops' Wars of the 1630s, where he distinguished himself in several battles. However, his loyalty to the crown would ultimately lead to his involvement in the English Civil War. Percy sided with the Royalists and was appointed as the Governor of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1642. He played a key role in defending the city against the Parliamentarian forces and was instrumental in the relief of York in 1644. Despite his military successes, Percy's fortunes took a turn for the worse. He was captured by the Parliamentarians in 1645 and was imprisoned for several years. After his release, he continued to serve the Royalist cause, but his health began to decline. He died in 1668, leaving behind a legacy as a brave and capable naval and military commander. This portrait, likely painted in the mid-17th century, depicts Percy in his military regalia, with a stern expression and a determined gaze. The artist, Anthony Dyke or Dijk, skillfully captures the earl's strength and resolve, making this a powerful and evocative representation of a pivotal figure in English history.
