EDITORS COMMENTS
15th Earl of Derby, Edward Stanley (1826-1893): A Statesman of Distinction This portrait captures the visage of Edward Stanley, the 15th Earl of Derby, a prominent figure in British politics during the Victorian era. Born on March 30, 1826, Stanley was the eldest son of the 14th Earl of Derby and Lady Emily Cowper. His aristocratic lineage, traced back to the Plantagenet dynasty, lent him an air of nobility and prestige. Stanley's political career began in earnest in 1852 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Lancaster. Over the next several decades, he held various positions in the Conservative Party, including serving as Home Secretary from 1866 to 1868 and as Prime Minister from 1852 to 1855 and 1866 to 1868. His tenure as Prime Minister was marked by his attempts to reform the Irish land system and his efforts to improve the working conditions of the working class in Britain. Despite his political successes, Stanley's personal life was marred by tragedy. He was married three times, and both his first and second wives died young, leaving him with a total of eight children. His third marriage, to Lady Constance Villiers, was a happy one, and they had three children together. Stanley's legacy extended beyond politics, as he was also an accomplished poet and author. His most famous work, "A Last Letter," was published posthumously and is still read and studied today. This photograph, taken during Stanley's later years, captures the wisdom and experience etched on his face, a testament to his remarkable life and career as a statesman and a member of the British aristocracy. The Earl of Derby passed away on March 24, 1893, leaving behind a rich legacy in British history.
