38th Artillery Guards Jefferson Regiment

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the 38th Regiment Jefferson Guards of the New York State Artillery, assembled for training on May 25, 1843. The Jefferson Guards, named after the third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, were an elite unit of the New York Militia, formed in 1836. The regiment was composed entirely of volunteers, and its members were known for their dedication and commitment to military service. The soldiers in this photograph are seen in their distinctive uniforms, which included a dark blue jacket with gold buttons and a red sash. They are arranged in a formation, with their artillery pieces positioned behind them. The men appear focused and alert, ready for action. The scene takes place in an open field, with trees and a clear blue sky in the background. The Jefferson Guards played an important role in the defense of New York State during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. In the Mexican-American War, they saw action in several battles, including the Battle of Monterrey and the Battle of Buena Vista. During the American Civil War, they were called into federal service and fought in several major battles, including the Battle of Gettysburg and the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. This photograph provides a rare glimpse into the daily life of the Jefferson Guards during peacetime. It is a reminder of the dedication and sacrifice of the volunteers who served in the New York State Militia, and the important role they played in the defense of their state and their country.
