1841 1871 Adare Dunraven Fourth Medium Quin Wyndham Yachtsman 1926

EDITORS COMMENTS
4th Earl Dunraven, Wyndham Thomas Wyndham-Quin (1841-1926), was a prominent figure in Victorian society, holding the title of Earl of Dunraven and serving as an M.P. from 1868 to 1874. Known for his love of yachting, Dunraven was a skilled sailor who made a significant impact on the sport. Born on February 17, 1841, Dunraven succeeded to the title of Earl of Dunraven in 1871, following the death of his father, the third earl. Prior to this, he was known as Lord Adare. Dunraven's political career began in earnest when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for County Limerick in 1868. He served in this role until 1874. Dunraven's passion for yachting was well documented, and he was a regular participant in regattas and races both in the United Kingdom and abroad. He was also associated with the medium D.D. Home, a spiritualist and psychic investigator. Despite his political and sailing pursuits, Dunraven's life was not without controversy. In 1879, he was involved in a high-profile legal case when he sued the Marquess of Queensberry for libel. The case, which became known as the "Queensberry Rules" trial, centered around the Marquess's accusations of homosexuality against Dunraven. The trial resulted in a hung jury, and Dunraven was ultimately acquitted. Dunraven continued to be active in yachting circles throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was a founding member of the Royal Ocean Racing Club in 1894 and served as its commodore from 1895 to 1896. Dunraven passed away on February 1, 1926, leaving behind a legacy as a prominent figure in Victorian society and a dedicated yachtsman. This photograph captures the Earl of Dunraven in his prime, likely during his time as an M.P. or while participating in a yachting event. The image offers a glimpse into the life of a man who defied convention and made his mark on both the political and sailing worlds.
