EDITORS COMMENTS
A Celebration of the Flamboyant Life of the 5th Marquess of Anglesey: Henry Paget (1875-1905) The 5th Marquess of Anglesey, Henry Paget, was a man of extraordinary charm, wit, and passion, whose love for jewels and the theatre illuminated his brief but memorable life. Born in 1875, Anglesey was the eldest son of the 4th Marquess and Lady Florence Dugdale. Known for his flamboyant personality and dashing good looks, Anglesey captivated the hearts of London society. This montage of images, published in The Sketch in March 1905, offers a glimpse into the many roles Anglesey played on the stage. In one photograph, he dons the regal attire of King Henry IV, while in another, he transforms into the dashing Captain Fancourt in "The Three Musketeers." Anglesey's theatrical pursuits were not just limited to the stage; he was also an accomplished violinist and a talented singer. However, Anglesey's life was tragically cut short at the young age of 29, when he passed away in March 1905. His untimely death left a void in the social and theatrical circles of London. The Marquess's love for jewels was legendary, and his collection was said to be one of the most valuable in England. His passion for the theatre, however, was perhaps his most enduring legacy. Anglesey's flamboyant spirit and zest for life continue to captivate us today, as these images attest.
