EDITORS COMMENTS
Adelaide Filleul, Marquise de Souza-Botelho (1761-1854), was a prolific French writer of the Romantic era. Born in Paris on March 2, 1761, she was the daughter of a wealthy merchant and was educated in the finest schools of the city. Her literary career began in 1806 when she published her first novel, "Les Deux Amis," under the pseudonym "Adelaide de Souza." The Marquise's writing was characterized by its emotional depth and vivid descriptions, often exploring themes of love, loss, and the supernatural. Her works were popular among the reading public and she quickly gained a large following. In 1836, she published one of her most famous novels, "La Comtesse de Rudolstadt," which was later adapted into a successful opera. Despite her success as a writer, the Marquise's personal life was marked by tragedy. She was married twice, both marriages ending in divorce. Her second husband, the Marquis de Souza-Botelho, was a Portuguese nobleman who was known for his cruelty and extravagance. The marriage was unhappy, and the Marquise eventually left him, taking her children with her. Despite the hardships she faced, the Marquise continued to write, producing over thirty novels and numerous short stories during her career. She died on January 23, 1854, at the age of 92, leaving behind a rich literary legacy. This photograph, taken around the time of her death, shows the Marquise in her later years. Her expression is one of quiet intensity, reflecting the depth and complexity of her writing. The portrait captures the essence of a woman who lived a full and fascinating life, both in her personal and professional pursuits.
