EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus (525-455 BC), a pivotal figure in the development of Western drama. Born in the city of Eleusis near Athens, Aeschylus is considered one of the three great tragedians of classical Athens, alongside Sophocles and Euripides. He is believed to have written over 90 plays, of which only 7 have survived to the present day. Aeschylus is renowned for introducing the second actor to the Greek stage, allowing for more complex plays with multiple characters and intricate plots. His works often explored the depths of human emotion and the supernatural, with themes of fate, justice, and the gods. Some of his most famous plays include "The Oresteia" trilogy ("Agamemnon," "The Libation Bearers," and "The Eumenides"), "Prometheus Bound," and "The Persians." The print, created in 1562, is an engraving by the Spanish artist Alonso Sánchez Coello, based on a portrait by the Greek painter Dionysios. It showcases Aeschylus in a thoughtful and introspective pose, with a quill pen in hand and a scroll at his feet. The print is part of the extensive collection of the Biblioteca Nacional de España in Madrid, Spain, and has been edited and reproduced by Mary Evans Picture Library. Aeschylus' influence on the world of theater is immeasurable, and his works continue to be performed and studied to this day. This beautiful print serves as a testament to his enduring legacy and the rich cultural heritage of ancient Greece.
