EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, created between 1816 and 1830, showcases two captivating pigeon species native to Africa: the African Green Pigeon (Treron calvus) and the Blue-crowned Pigeon (Goura cristata). The illustration is taken from the esteemed "Dictionnaire de Naturalisation: Omnithologie" ornithology section of Dumont de Sainte-Croix's "Dictionnaire de Natural Science: Ornithology," published in Paris, France. Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, was responsible for the original painting, while David engraved and Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin directed the project. The intricate details of the African Green Pigeon are depicted in lush greens, with its distinctive black and white head markings. The Blue-crowned Pigeon, with its vibrant blue crown and iridescent green and purple body, is equally captivating. The African Green Pigeon, also known as the Western Green Pigeon, is a widespread species found throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Although not currently considered threatened, its population trends are not well known. The Blue-crowned Pigeon, on the other hand, is classified as vulnerable due to habitat loss and hunting. This exquisite piece of historical artwork provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the early 19th century, showcasing the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that defined the era's natural history illustrations. The collaboration between Pretre, David, and Turpin resulted in an enduring testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world.
