He arrived in New South Wales, Australia, in 1839 and quickly established himself as a successful pastoralist and businessman. In 1856, Cochrane-Baillie entered politics, representing the seat of Lismore in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. He served in various roles, including Colonial Secretary and Chief Protector of Aborigines, before being appointed as the Governor of Queensland in 1866. During his tenure as Governor, he oversaw the establishment of the first free public schools and the expansion of the telegraph network. Cochrane-Baillie's literary pursuits began in earnest in the 1860s, and he published several works on Australian history and politics. His most notable work, "The Early Days in New South Wales," is a three-volume account of the colony's early history, based on his personal experiences and extensive research.
