This nineteenth-century colored engraving depicts a pivotal moment in the history of the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages: the Siege of Cuenca on September 21, 1177. The image showcases two of the most prominent kings of the time, Alfonso II of Aragon and Alfonso VIII of Castile, leading their armies against the Moorish forces besieged within the city walls. Alfonso II, also known as Alfonso the Chaste, is depicted on the left side of the image, wearing the royal robes of the Crown of Aragon and holding a banner bearing the cross, symbolizing his role as a Christian monarch.
