Danes Danish Disguised Disguises Harp Minstrel Wessex Guthrum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts King Alfred the Great of Wessex (849-899 AD) in disguise within the Danish camp, employing the ruse of a minstrel to uncover the plans of the Danish leader, Guthrum. In the year 878 AD, Alfred, a renowned scholar and tactician, faced a significant threat from the Danish invaders who had conquered much of England. Seeking intelligence to prepare for the impending battle, Alfred donned the garb of a traveling minstrel, accompanied by his harp, and infiltrated the enemy camp. Within the Danish encampment, Alfred gained the trust of the Danes by showcasing his musical abilities and engaging them in stories of heroic deeds. Guthrum, intrigued by the minstrel's tales, revealed crucial information about the Danish forces, their strengths, and weaknesses. Armed with this knowledge, Alfred returned to his forces and prepared for the Battle of Edington, also known as the Battle of Ethandun. The battle, fought on June 8, 878 AD, proved to be a turning point in the history of England. Alfred's well-informed strategy led to a decisive victory against the Danish forces, marking the end of the Danish occupation of Wessex. King Alfred's leadership and intelligence, demonstrated through his clever disguise as a minstrel, played a significant role in preserving the English kingdom and paving the way for its future prosperity.
