Alfred Milner, Viscount Milner (1854-1925), was a prominent British colonial administrator, best known for his intransigent attitude towards the Boers during the Second Boer War (1899-1902). Milner's stern and unyielding approach to the conflict earned him the nickname 'The High Priest of War.' Born in London, Milner was educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He began his career in the civil service, holding various positions in India and Egypt before being appointed High Commissioner and Governor-General of the Cape Colony in 1897. Milner's tenure in South Africa was marked by his determination to bring the Boer republics of the Transvaal and the Orange Free State under British control. He implemented a scorched earth policy, which involved the destruction of Boer farms and livestock, and the internment of civilians in concentration camps. Milner believed that only through the complete subjugation of the Boers could lasting peace be achieved. Despite the controversy and criticism that surrounded his methods, Milner remained steadfast in his convictions. He was a firm believer in the idea of the 'White Man's Burden,' which held that it was the duty of European powers to civilize and govern non-European peoples. Milner saw the Boer War as an opportunity to extend British influence and bring progress to the region.
