EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Almshouses of Waddington, a historic village located in the picturesque Ribble Valley of Lancashire, England. Dating back to 1908, these Almshouses were established to provide shelter and support for the elderly and infirm members of the local community. The image offers a glimpse into the past, revealing the simple yet charming architecture of the buildings and the tranquil surroundings that once provided a sanctuary for those in need. The Almshouses, which are thought to have been built in the late 17th or early 18th century, were extensively renovated in the early 20th century, as evidenced by the addition of the distinctive red-tiled roofs and the neatly tended gardens. The residents, who were known as 'brethren,' lived in small, self-contained cottages, each with its own fireplace and garden plot. They were provided with food, clothing, and fuel, as well as a small allowance for personal expenses. The Almshouses were funded through the generosity of local benefactors, including the Waddington family, who owned the nearby Waddington Hall. The philanthropic tradition continued into the 20th century, with the addition of new Almshouses in 1935, funded by the local landowner, Lord Clitheroe. This photograph offers a poignant reminder of the rich history and community spirit of Waddington, a village that has long been renowned for its commitment to caring for its most vulnerable members. Today, the Almshouses continue to serve as a testament to the generosity and compassion of those who came before us, and as a reminder of the importance of looking out for one another.
