EDITORS COMMENTS
This drawing showcases the enigmatic and influential figure of Brazilian writer, Mario Raul de Andrade (1893-1945). Andrade is considered one of the most important literary figures in Brazilian history, known for his innovative and groundbreaking works that challenged traditional literary norms and paved the way for modern Brazilian literature. Born in Campinas, São Paulo, on April 16, 1893, Andrade began his literary career in the early 1920s, publishing poems, stories, and essays in various magazines and anthologies. His unique style, which blended modernist influences with Brazilian folklore and culture, set him apart from his contemporaries and earned him a devoted following. One of Andrade's most famous works is "Macunaíma: A Brazilian Adventure," a novel that tells the story of a mythical figure from the Amazon rainforest who embarks on a journey of self-discovery and transformation. The novel is considered a seminal work of Brazilian modernism and has been translated into several languages. Andrade's impact on Brazilian literature was significant, and he continues to be studied and celebrated today. He was also an influential figure in the arts and culture scene in Brazil, working as a journalist, translator, and editor. Tragically, Andrade's life was cut short when he was killed by a truck while crossing a street in São Paulo on December 18, 1945. Despite his untimely death, his legacy as a pioneering Brazilian writer continues to inspire and influence generations of writers and artists. This evocative drawing captures the essence of Andrade's enigmatic personality and his enduring impact on Brazilian literature and culture.
