EDITORS COMMENTS
Andrew Johnson: From Tailor's Apprentice to Impeached President of the United States (1808-1875) This striking portrait captures Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, who defied the odds to rise from humble beginnings as a tailor's apprentice to the highest office in the land, only to face the threat of impeachment. Born on December 29, 1808, in Raleigh, North Carolina, Johnson was orphaned at an early age and apprenticed to a local tailor. He later moved to Greeneville, Tennessee, where he established his own tailor shop and became involved in local politics. Johnson's political career took off when he was elected as a Whig Party member to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1843. He later served as a Senator and as Military Governor of Tennessee during the Civil War. Johnson's presidency, which began upon the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865, was marked by his controversial Reconstruction policies. He sought to rebuild the South by allowing former Confederate states to rejoin the Union without granting full civil and political rights to African Americans. Johnson's actions were met with fierce opposition from Congress, leading to his impeachment trial in 1868. Despite the charges against him, Johnson was acquitted by the Senate and remained in office until the end of his term in 1869. This historic event marked the only time in U.S. history that a president faced impeachment proceedings. Johnson's legacy remains a complex one, with some viewing him as a champion of states' rights and others as a barrier to racial equality. This portrait serves as a reminder of his remarkable rise to power and the challenges he faced during his time in office.
