Animals at a French Zoo - Persian deer
Animals at a French Zoo - Persian deer - deer gazing out through bars. Part of Box 209 Boswell collection - Old and New French Zoo. Slide 15. Persian fallow deer are physically larger than fallow deer and are nearly extinct today. They were formerly found from Mesopotamia and Egypt to the Cyrenaica and Cyprus. Their preferred habitat is open woodland. Since 1996 they have been gradually and successfully reintroduced from a breeding centre in the Carmel, into the wild in northern Israel, and more than 650 of them now live in the Galilee, Mount Carmel areas and the Brook of Sorek. Date: circa 1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken circa 1900, captures the melancholic gaze of a Persian deer as it stands before the bars of its enclosure at a French zoo. Persian deer, also known as Persian fallow deer, are physically larger than their common counterparts and were once native to open woodlands from Mesopotamia and Egypt to the Cyrenaica and Cyprus. Unfortunately, these majestic creatures are now nearly extinct, with an estimated population of fewer than 1,000 remaining in the wild. The Persian deer's decline is attributed to habitat loss, poaching, and competition with common fallow deer. Despite their endangered status, there is hope for the Persian deer's survival. Since 1996, a breeding center in the Carmel region of Israel has been working to reintroduce these animals back into the wild. Over 650 Persian deer now live in the Galilee, Mount Carmel areas, and the Brook of Sorek, marking a successful conservation effort. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of protecting endangered species and their habitats. The Persian deer's story is one of hope and resilience, and their continued survival is a testament to the power of conservation efforts.
