1717 1744 Anne Career Duchesse Mistress Nesle Sisters Youngest

EDITORS COMMENTS
Anne Duchesse de Chateauroux, also known as Anne de Nesle, was the youngest of three sisters who became renowned for their scandalous relationships with the French king, Louis XV. Born into the noble Nesle family, Anne's allure and charm captured the attention of the king in 1717, when she was just a young woman. Her older sisters, Pauline and Marie-Anne, had already become the king's mistresses, making the Nesle sisters the talk of the French court. Anne's beauty and intelligence quickly won over the king, and she became his official mistress in 1722. The relationship between Anne and Louis XV was marked by passion and extravagance, with Anne reportedly receiving an annual allowance of 800,000 livres. She was granted the title of Duchesse de Chateauroux and was given the Chateau de Chateauroux as her residence. Despite the scandal and controversy surrounding their relationships with the king, the Nesle sisters continued to wield significant influence at court. Anne was known for her intelligence and her ability to navigate the complex political landscape of the French court. She was also a patron of the arts and supported many artists and writers of the time. Anne's tenure as the king's mistress ended in 1744, when she was replaced by Madame de Pompadour. Despite her fall from favor, Anne continued to live a wealthy and influential life. She died in 1780 at the age of 71. This stunning portrait captures Anne Duchesse de Chateauroux in her prime, with her elegant and refined beauty on full display. The image serves as a reminder of the complex and fascinating history of the French court during the reign of Louis XV, a time of passion, scandal, and intrigue.
