Anon McLoughlin, also known as '4 & 20' or 'Forty and Twenty' McLoughlin, was a renowned 19th-century Irish tailor and folk hero, famous for his exceptional skills and generosity. This evocative photograph captures the essence of McLoughlin's legendary status, as he stands proudly in his tailor shop, surrounded by the tools of his trade. Born in County Monaghan, Ireland, in 1812, McLoughlin emigrated to the United States in 1831, settling in Philadelphia. He quickly established himself as a master tailor, renowned for his ability to create perfectly fitting garments for his clients. McLoughlin's reputation spread far and wide, and he became known as the 'Tailor to the Presidents.' He is said to have made suits for every president from Andrew Jackson to Grover Cleveland. He was particularly famous for his '4 & 20' suits, which he would give away to those in need. The name '4 & 20' is believed to have originated from the number of stitches required to mend a coat, or from the number of men in a traditional Irish work gang.
